I had my one month post-activation mapping and testing today. I might just be a rock star after all! There are so many sounds I had forgotten about that are coming back – like birds! Things that I knew logically made noise but I hadn’t heard so long that I pretty much forgot.
I’ve been out socially 3 times in the last 3 weeks, which is a lot for me. But it’s fascinating how easy it is now. Last night, I was out with about 20 coworkers, half of which I know, half I’ve never spoken to before. I had a GREAT time. It was so easy to participate in conversations. Did I still miss things? Of course. But not anywhere near what I would have missed before.
If you’ve been in my car in the last 10 years or so, you’ve probably noticed the stereo sound is only coming from the front driver’s side. This is on purpose, since I spend most of my driving time singing along to my music and needed it to flow to me from the best place possible. Wednesday, I changed it back to the center of the car (on purpose. My ex used to change it back all the time and it made me crazy.)
Imagine you are listening to the world through earbuds. One side sounds great, as normal as you know. The other side sounds like a radio station coming in poorly and distantly. The sound seems far away, voices are distorted and don’t really make much sense, but yet you know what they’re saying because of the other side. Everything has a tinny high pitch to it. That’s pretty much my hearing right now.
Yesterday was activation day. I did not have a “rock star” activation, nor did I have a bad one. I think I’m absolutely average. The good news: I hear sound. The bad news: my brain does not yet know what to make of the sound.
